Key Specifications for Ski Jackets

Image
There are many key specifications that you need to be aware of when it comes to your ski jacket. One factor may be budget, so you may not always get the exact jacket you want. However, here are the key aspects that I think you should not compromise on to ensure you get a comfortable, warm and dry experience on the mountain.   Waterproof In my opinion, the number one feature of any  snowboard jacket  is waterproofing. There is nothing worse than getting wet from a little rain or snow and ending up cold and uncomfortable. Getting an early ride home from the mountain or getting a break in the day is enough. I know what it's like to have both a truly non-waterproof jacket and a truly waterproof jacket, and the difference is worlds apart.   So how do you know if a jacket is waterproof before you buy it? Snowboard jackets will usually indicate their waterproofness in two of three ways ● How the seams are sealed ● Waterproof rating ● Gore-tex   Unisex denim like...

We detail what to look for in a ski jacket

1. Jacket Layers: 2L vs. 3L When you look deeper into a ski jacket, you will always see references to fabric layers and "2L" or "3L". In short, these relate to the way the jacket is constructed. 2-layer construction bonds the outer fabric to a waterproof membrane, with a separate "hanging" lining (usually made of mesh) on the inside. On the other hand, the three-layer construction joins three parts together: the fabric, the membrane and the smooth fabric lining. Starting with 2-layer jackets, these jackets are associated with budget and mid-range resort models and range in price from $170 to $450. They offer good waterproof protection and durability, but the separate lining adds considerable bulk and doesn't breathe well. Three-layer jackets are more expensive, starting at about $400, and high-end styles can run $700 or more. The price you pay is superior performance and lighter weight. They are excellent at repelling all forms of wind and moisture, ar...

How to Choose a Ski Jacket

Image
We detail what to look for in a ski jacket, including insulation, weatherproofing, breathability and durability. As your outermost layer, ski jackets play a key role in keeping you comfortable and protected from inclement weather. The jacket market has expanded in recent years, covering everything from warm and comfortable insulated resort pieces to lightweight, breathable and stretchy styles for travel in remote areas. Below we detail all the important considerations for choosing the right ski jacket for you, including type (insulated, shell and triple), weather protection, durability, breathability, fit and more.    1. resort and/or remote area?  When  choosing a ski jacket , first consider your planned use. If you are at a resort, your needs will be fairly simple: stay warm and dry. Of course there are other considerations such as pockets and build quality, but this is mostly about managing comfort on colder rides. On the other hand, those exploring remote ar...

When picking out the perfect snowboard outerwear for your riding conditions

Breathability rating As you snowboard moisture can build up in your jacket from snow, rain, or fog. Moisture will also build from sweat your body is producing. It is important that your outwear allows this moisture to escape otherwise it can freeze and lower your body temperature, making you colder. A higher rating on the breathability scale, the better the jacket/pant is at letting moisture escape. Breathability is measured in grams. This is most commonly tested by seeing how many grams of water vapor can pass through one square meter of the fabric in 24 hours. You will see most ratings in the range of 1,000g-20,000g.   Identifying your needs for breathability are not as clear cut as identifying the waterproofing rating that would work best for you. People who perspire a lot or hike backcountry all day will definitely want a higher breathability rating. That said, most snowboard outerwear breathability ratings will increase as your waterproof rating increases. Keep in mind that ma...

UNDERSTANDING SNOWBOARD OUTERWEAR

Image
Snowboard outerwear can make or break your day on the mountain. Staying warm and dry makes all the difference. Choosing the right gear for the current weather conditions can help make any day on the mountain more enjoyable. There are several key drivers that go into choosing the right snowboard pants and jacket. In this guide, we will go over some of the major things to look for when picking out the perfect snowboard outerwear for your riding conditions.   Waterproof rating The waterproof rating system is a fairly simple scale to understand. The first thing to remember is that when we refer to waterproof, we really mean a measurement of water resistance. You’ll often see the waterproof rating scale represented on a jacket or pant in a mix of different formats that all mean the same thing (Ex. 10,000 or 10K or 10,000mm). Outerwear manufacturers test waterproof levels in different ways but the general standard is the static-column test. In this test a tube is filled wi...
